We have heard and read all we could about the Ford Focus RS. It is a mighty machine and one of the best hot hatches of all time. However, we are really curious about something – can it go a bit further? Can it be as fast as the Porsche Cayman GT4? Yes, we are aiming high as the Cayman GT4 is one of the best machines ever. However, as fantastic as it could be the small hot-hatch is a perfectly executed piece of machinery whose four-wheel drive, extreme amounts of grip and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires provide race like spirit.
Autocar’s presenter Sam Sheehan had a chance to stack up the Ford Focus RS against the Porsche Cayman GT4 at the Belgian track Spa-Francorchamps. The end result is quite amazing because the Cayman GT4 did overtake the Focus RS, but then the small cheap hatch followed it without many problems.
Comparing a $35,900 hot-hatch with a $85,595 mid-engine Porsche is a bit incredible, but hey, we live in strange times, don’t we!? The Focus RS has an engine of 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. That is one mean machine with enough power to smack down many sports cars. On the other hand, the Cayman GT4 sourced its engine from the awesome Porsche 911 Carrera. The 3.8-liter six cylinder engine has a power of 385 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. Don’t get too excited about that torque value. Although the Ford has more of it, it seems that the Focus cannot actually touch upon it and overtake it. Sure, we are not surprised, but a Ford making such a follow up is amazing, to say the least.
