The biggest game of the year is behind us and now we can remind ourselves how serious car manufacturers had been in marketing their stuff during the short breaks. Yes, we are talking about the Super Bowl and about millions of dollars car producers gave to the organizers to advertise their cars.
Some big names were not here – BMW and Mercedes-Benz included, yet Hyundai, Kia, Mini, Honda, Toyota and Subaru took the job quite seriously.
Apart from paying a hefty price for the screen time, marketing teams had to come out with great ideas and plots for their commercials. Some made it good, some better and some excelled in every conceivable way. Audi is the one who thought us how cool, emotional and touching commercials can be even when advertising a proper sports car tuning supercar – and the R8.
Although the Audi R8 commercial was a win in every way (David Bowie Starman soundtrack included), the most surprising commercial actually was about the Toyota Prius. It is hard to wrap our heads around it, so watch it and try to figure it all out. The Toyota Prius ad could be on the right track here if they follow it up in the future.
Subaru and Hyundai did well too. Subaru continued with their Dog Tested theme making lovable and somewhat appealing commercials while Hyundai showed off the main features of its Blue Link infotainment system in a rather strange commercial. Just a hint – if you have the Hyundai Genesis, you’ll be able to stalk – a lot.
