This small piece of ingenuity is called the Blackbird, but it is not a futuristic supercar or a template for something revolutionary. It is a machine designed specifically to enable teams to shoot any car in the world, without actually having a car to shoot. So, what are we saying here!? More or less, this is a rig which can represent almost any car you imagine. Video team shoots the rig instead of a real car and afterwards they add all other CGI stuff to make it look like an actual car. And it works. With it, car companies can have a commercial shoot almost everywhere without ever bringing the car for a shoot. Now, you may imagine that shooting the Ford F-150 or the Corolla should not be that hard because they are everywhere, but imagine shooting something like the Mercedes-AMG GT R that was released yesterday. Daimler would not even have to bring the car to the location. That is a huge deal. With it, spy shots would become much harder to get.
What differentiates the Blackbird from everything else is its layout. Track width, wheelbase, and suspension can be adjusted in any way to mimic any car you may imagine. This way car commercials can be filmed without an actual car. Movies can be made without having insane cars racing all over the place.
The car is produced by a London-based company called The Mill. The concept behind it is amazing, to say the least. More or less, the Blackbird would scan and shoot all its surroundings and then with this data (and the data from the actual camera shooting the car), CGI artists will be able to replicate basically any car on top of Blackbird frame. Truly an amazing piece of technology.
