This is a bit ironic. The ultimate American Muscle car – the Corvette was transformed into an electric car with a propulsion system so powerful it enabled it to hit the speed of 186mph. Why is it ironic then!? Well, the Corvette is the epitome of a muscle car – an absolute contrast to an electric car. That is why the name Corvette was almost ditched altogether for this project. The car you can see here is called the Genovation GXE (for the Genovation eXtreme Electric) – and it is a magnificent effort of a small team to create the world’s fastest street legal electric car!
During high-speed mile testing, the Genovation GXE ‘Vette reached a top speed of 186,6 mph (about 300 kph) and this was enough to shatter the previously held record which was at 177 mph. International Mile Racing Association certified the attempt and the result making the Genovation GXE “Top Speed Street Legal Electric Car”.
In a statement, Genovation’s CEO Andrew Saul said “We are thrilled that the result of our development testing led to the setting of this record. Based on our experience so far, we believe the car to be extremely robust as we set the record on our first day of testing.”
The Genovation GXE is based on the 2006 Corvette Z06 but instead of just usual stuff under the bonnet, the car received an awesome electric powertrain pushing out 700hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Interestingly enough, the car is prepared for true electric drives in the city where it can, apparently, cover up to 130 miles on a single charge.
