We wanted it. The whole world wanted it to happen and BMW listened. This is ladies and gentlemen, the first footage of the BMW i8 Spyder testing. Yes, this took place on the Nurburgring where BMW looked to sharpen up its most amazing creation. Obviously, the BMW i8 is a car the whole world went crazy about. It is futuristic, carbon fiber filled, eco-friendly and it is fast. Now, it is not hypercar fast, but it does tickle all the boxes of the hypercar ethos. Nevertheless, the spyder version, spied here with the roof up, definitely makes us believe we will see it on the streets – maybe even in time for the Geneva Motor Show in March next year.
We have not seen or heard anything official from BMW about the i8 Spyder since the i8 Spyder concept revealed in 2012. Yes, a multitude of unofficial info came out, but for the first official hints, we had to wait for March of 2016 when BMW, at their press conference, revealed their plans which include the creation of the i8 Spyder.
It is expected that the car continues with the same propulsion system developing 367 hp. However, it will have a new roof and probably a see-through tonneau hump behind the seats. Sure, rear seats will be ditched altogether, but the roof, if we are right, could be composed of two parts. Here, on the spy video, it seems that the roof is made of two separate pieces. We can guess they are made of carbon fiber or some fancy composite material. Sure, everything is still in the development form, so the real deal could be much different, but the only important fact here is – the futuristic i8 Spyder is coming. It will look awesome, no question there.
Apart from the Spyder, BMW could develop a superfast version of the i8. Some sources even suggested that the car could have more than 700hp. In that case, and considering BMW excellence, the super fast i8 could match all the supercars of today. So, 650S, 488 GTB, and Huracan – BMW could be as fast, or even faster.
