When BMW revealed the newest BMW 2 series, they said this car could be a spiritual successor to the legendary E36 3 series Coupe. It is much the same size as the old Beemer, so the M2 of today may actually be the closest thing to the BMW M3 E36 from the Nineties. Could it be?
Both cars certainly have some similarities, especially in the whole Ultimate Driving Machine ethos. Sure, the newest is a quicker, sharper, better sorted out car altogether, but it continues to rumble along the same story as the old BMW E36 M3. Think about it. Both have straight six engines, both have awesome RWD, 50/50 weight distribution, much the same dimensions and both look quite nice.
So, our favorite guy from Carthrottle had to do a comparison between the two and show us how these cars stack up against each other. Of course, the host of the Carthrottle has an old M3 and he is the perfect man to tells us about the ways the new BMW M2 is just like a 20-year-old M3. He succeeded in finding six ways of how the new car is similar to the old one. We will only list some of the things Alex found out about the M2. It can do sick burnouts – like the old car. It has an awesome short-throw manual gearbox – line the old car. It has fantastic sound – like the old car. And it is similarly sized as the old car. Enough for Alex. Enough for us.
All in all, the newest M2 is quite a machine and a lot of people actually call it the best of the
Ms of today.
