While it is obvious that sports cars and supercars have an edge over sedans and caravans, the Germans were so interested in creating superfast massive machines that they almost broke the code of releasing equally fast supercars, sedans, and wagons. Remember M5, RS6, R8, E63? They are all almost equally fast, but the truth is that when put on the track – almost any kind of track, supercars cannot be beaten. Or can they?
Enjoy another Auto Express dogfight between the Audi RS6 Avant and the Audi R8 V10 Spyder. Interestingly enough, two Audi cars develop much the same power with the RS6 Performance giving out 605hp out of its four-liter V8. On the other hand, the 5.2-liter V10 is good for 540hp. Both have Quattro all-wheel drive and sick effective Launch control system.
The drag race is straightforward really. Put down the marker and off we go. But the way these two absolutely different cars behave is quite amusing. While the RS6 Performance has much more power, it also has quite more weight to it. Yet, the start of the race saw the supercar jump only a few inches ahead before the Audi RS6 simply grabbed it by the neck and drove the race of its life running to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and to 100 mph in 7.8 seconds. Both times by 0.2 seconds faster than the Audi R8 V10 Spyder. By the end of one-kilometer race, the Audi R8 V10 Spyder jumped ahead but just barely. In fact, these two are so close we are sure that in some cases even the massive Wagon could win. There simply isn’t much difference between the two regarding speed. There is a huge difference in price though. The R8 V10 Spyder costs £130,000 while the RS6 Performance ships for £86,000. Quite a difference, isn’t it!?
