What would it be like to be driven in an autonomous car!? We may get the cars that do the driving and we do the sitting in less than three years, but there are, right now, autonomous cars on the roads driving on their own. This one shown here is possibly the best representation of the technology and it has been revealed to us by Jalopnik presenter. He got the chance to be driven in an autonomous Tesla Model S and his reactions are priceless.
After seeing a multitude of videos showing how the Tesla Model S makes people freak out when accelerating hard (like here, here and here), now we have the chance to see the Tesla Model S in a totally different environment – driving itself. The tech IS available for the masses, but as it turns out it certainly gives us a representation of what we may enjoy in the future. This is not a fully autonomous drive system. It is actually, like, really, really smart cruise control which works in a too-good-to-be-true kind of way. The Jalopnik presenter was so enchanted by it that he was almost lost for words and just seeing it all unfold is quite remarkable.
How clever this system is is best shown by the autonomous nature of every onboard system. The Tesla Model S with the autonomous mode activated has sensors that follow what is happening 16 feets of the car in any direction. It also has advanced long range sensors, radars and cameras which can track almost any movement in any direction. The results are simply awesome. Final words Michael Ballaban are as impressive as they are creepy – “I started freaking up before the car did.” Hello future, please do not kill us, we will behave!
