Americans invented Drag Racing. Back in the 1930s, large avenues were perfect spots for underground racing sessions and anyone with fast enough car would be the champ. Mobsters were the business back then mainly because they had to have faster cars than the police to outrun them in any occasion.
Of course, the racing scene was booming and American muscle cars, with enormous engines, started to dominate the scene. The Sixties and the Seventies were the golden years of such muscle cars, but it seems that the present is also golden for muscle cars. The race you are about to witness – between the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 and the Chevrolet Camaro SS is just about the perfect representation of everything the USA loves.
These two are different in every measurable way – one is an SUV, with aerodynamic characteristics of a brick, while the other is pure American muscle car with the RWD. We are curious about the Grand Cherokee SRT AWD’s capabilities and they should help immensely during the initial acceleration. However, the Grand Cherokee is far heavier than the Camaro SS and that makes a whole lot of a difference. This half-mile race with a speed trap recorded 137 mph for the Camaro while we are not sure how fast the Grand Cherokee was. Nevertheless, you can see the clash for yourself and be the judge.
