Competition between the Honda Civic and the Volkswagen Golf is as old as the universe itself. So seeing two of the most powerful and most amazing versions of these cars on the drag strip is eye candy like no other. Fortunately, Auto Express from the UK is enchanted by these cars as everybody else and they have devised a one-mile drag race just to see what happens with these two. The results are out and are quite interesting.
First, the facts – the race featured the Honda Civic Type R and the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S. These two are the most powerful front wheel driven cars. And not only the most powerful, but the fastest as well. Both lapped the Nurburgring in less than 8 minutes. Honda did it first beating everybody, then the Golf GTI Clubsport S made a move and lapped the ‘ring in 7:49.21. This is 1.4 seconds faster than what Honda did some time earlier.
Both cars are powered by a two-liter engine developing 306 hp. Only, the one in Honda has 400 Nm of torque – 20 more than the TSI in the GTI. The start sees the Honda taking off a bit faster and more ferociously, yet, the Golf is a quick learner. It jumps back equaling Honda’s speed and then surges forward at high speed. What we are saying here is that if you need to beat someone with a Golf at low speed – up to 80 mph, the Honda is your best bet, but if a mile run is any reference (and it has to be), the Golf is a car to have. It is quite amazing how effortlessly this fwd speed machine surges and keeps picking up speed. It is probably related to gearing. After all, the Honda has 4 mph higher top speed.
