Dodge Charger Hellcat may be the most American car of all time. It is wide, large, heavy, has the right number of doors, proper muscle car stance and an awesome engine developing more power than a majority of European supercars. Fantastically fast SRT Charger Hellcat actually has its own nemesis in-house – the much more expensive Viper. Here, we are seeing both of them in a half a mile race trying to outdo each other. What is amazing is the fact that a supercar – which the Dodge Viper most certainly is despite its ruggedness – cannot actually throw the family sedan into oblivion on the track. The race is rather amazingly close but that should not come as a surprise.
These machines are bare stock. That does not, however, mean that they are not seriously fast. The race happened at the Pikes Peak, using the Colorado Airport runway. With an 8.4-liter V10 engine developing 645 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque (816 Nm), the Dodge Viper is a weapon on the track. Fantastically fast Dodge Viper V10 can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Despite the power advantage, the Charger Hellcat is a bit slower. No surprise there as it moves around with a bit more weight.
What is curious is that the Charger is a family sedan and it still can be compared with the magnificent supercar. With a 6.2-liter V8 and a supercharger, the Charger has 707hp to dispose of with. That is huge – even more than what the Lamborghini Aventador disposes of with. Nevertheless, that was not enough for the win. The Viper is just on another level in the 1/2 mile race.
